Leaf-cutter Ants (Atta sp.)

Swarms of winged females occur for a short period of time each year.  Workers can be seen carrying leaves back to the subterranean gardens.  They grow the fungus that they eat on the decaying leaves.  Large-headed soldier ants can be seen guarding the workers, along the transport routes.
