Cicadas

In Mexico, they call cicadas "Rainbirds".  When the rains start, the pupae crawl from the ground, up into trees and other vertical surfaces.  They hatch out of their pupal "shells" (see below), emerging as adults.  Their exoskeletons harden, as they spread their new wings for the first time.  Only the adults make the sound.  Most cicada species are not as colorful as those seen below.
